Setup Free Azure DevOps to streamline workflows, automate deployments, and manage code repositories effectively. Organizations leveraging DevOps experience 46x more frequent deployments and 5x lower failure rates (State of DevOps Report). By integrating Azure DevOps, teams gain a competitive edge with automation, version control, and CI/CD capabilities.

Get Started: Sign Up for a Free Azure DevOps Account

Azure DevOps offers a completely free tier for individuals and small teams. Here’s how to sign up:

  1. Open your browser and navigate to Azure DevOps.
  2. Click “Start free”.
  3. Sign in with your Microsoft account (Outlook, Hotmail, or Office 365). If you don’t have one, create a free Microsoft account.
  4. Once logged in, Azure DevOps will prompt you to create an organization to manage your projects.

Create a DevOps Organization for Your Team

  1. Enter a unique organization name (e.g., MyDevOpsOrg).
  2. Select a region close to your team for the best performance.
  3. Click “Continue” to proceed.
  4. Once created, you’ll land on the Azure DevOps dashboard.

Launch Your First Project

  1. Click “New Project”.
  2. Enter a Project Name (e.g., ServiceNow-Integration-Test).
  3. Choose Visibility:
    • Private – Recommended for internal projects.
    • Public – Use for open-source or external collaboration.
  4. Select a Version Control System:
    • Git – Preferred for modern development workflows.
    • TFVC – For legacy Microsoft repositories.
  5. Click “Create” to start.

Key Features to Leverage in Azure DevOps

Once inside your project, explore these powerful tools:

  • Boards:
    • Kanban Framework: Visualize your work and optimize flow. Perfect for teams looking to improve efficiency with a visual approach.
    • Scrum Framework: Plan and track sprints, manage backlogs, and deliver iterative improvements. Ideal for Agile teams practicing Scrum.
  • Repos:
    • Git-Based Version Control: Secure and scalable, Azure Repos provides a centralized location for managing your code with version control using Git.
    • Collaboration: Enables collaboration through pull requests, code reviews, and branch policies.
  • Pipelines:
    • CI/CD Automation: Automate the process of building, testing, and deploying code. Create pipelines for continuous integration and continuous delivery.
      • Multi-Stage Pipelines: Break down the delivery process into multiple stages, from development to production, ensuring robust release management.
  • Test Plans:
    • Manual Testing: Design and run manual tests, log bugs, and capture rich data.
      • Automated Testing: Integrate automated tests in your CI/CD pipeline for consistent and reliable testing.
  • Artifacts:
    • Package Management: Store and manage reusable software components. Supports multiple package types such as NuGet, npm, Maven, etc.
    • Versioning: Track and maintain different versions of your components, ensuring consistency across deployments.

Manage Users and Permissions

To add and configure users:

  1. Navigate to Organization Settings > Users.
  2. Click “Invite”, enter email addresses, and assign roles:
    • Administrator – Full control over DevOps projects.
    • Contributor – Can modify code and manage pipelines.
    • Reader – View-only access.
  3. Click “Add” to finalize.

Create a Sample CI/CD Pipeline

  1. Click Pipelines > New Pipeline.
  2. Choose a repository:
    • Azure Repos Git (if using an ADO Git repo).
    • GitHub (to connect an external repo).
  3. Select a pre-built template (e.g., .NET Core, Node.js, or YAML).
  4. Define build and deployment steps.
  5. Click “Run” to execute your first CI/CD pipeline.
